Unlike the most popular seaside towns in Greece, it is not on an island but nestled on the Peloponnese peninsula’s south shore, a two-hour drive from Athens. It’s a simple weekend getaway for Athenians and also a beguiling escape for arrival who want to soak up the charms of coastal Greece without the crowds that you’d find in Sant History buffs are especially attracted to Nafplio as it was the 1st capital of the modern Greek state from 1823 to 1834 before the mantle was claimed by Athens.
